The Ashes – cricket’s most celebrated rivalry – began in 1882 when Australia defeated England on English soil for the first time at The Oval. A cheeky obituary in the Sporting Times declared: “The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.” England’s captain Ivo Bligh (later Lord Darnley) soon toured Australia, determined to reclaim “the ashes,” while Australia’s WL Murdoch vowed to defend them.
Over 140 years later, the Ashes remain one of sport’s fiercest contests, capturing the imagination of players and fans alike on both sides of the globe. The urn itself - a delicate and rare treasure - has only travelled to Australia twice: in 1988 for the Bicentenary museum tour, and again in 2006/07 for the series.
