The drought came to an end in 1990 for Collingwood supporters, after thirty-two years of heartache and nine unsuccessful Grand Final attempts. The Magpies faced a strong Essendon side who finished one place ahead of them at the top of the ladder by the close of the regular season. Collingwood’s 14th Premiership team, in its fourth year under the combination of Leigh Matthews as coach and Tony Shaw as captain, was fresh off two seasons of September appearances. Without their star player Alan Richardson, the Collingwood side were spurred by a sensational Peter Daicos supported by Craig Starcevich, Scott Russell, Tony Francis, Shane Kerrison, Damian Monkhorst and Darren Millane dominating in similar fashion. Captain Shaw controlled the midfield on his way to becoming a Norm Smith Medallist, as the Magpies defeated a Essendon team by eight goals. There were numerous theatrics and unforgettable moments that make this a memorable victory in the hearts of Collingwood fans.
